The ranking of a clan member within a clan is determined by the colour associated with that branch of the clan. For example the Gold Bat branch is the ranking branch of the Bat Clan. The next in line is the red branch and so on down a list of colours. When the above branch runs out of heirs one is chosen from the next branch one tier down and the colours cascade downwards with the red Branch becoming gold and so forth.
A child will always gain the rank of the higher ranking parent no matter the difference. Unless one parent is an outcast in which case the child will have a lower rank. This means that the higher ranks are more careful about who they consort with but also that no child of a clan member is not taken care of. Not acknowledging a child is an act of dishonour.
A child of two clans is adopted into one of the two clans. Again this is usually the ranking parent's clan but can be the lower if the other parent lives with the lower ranking clan thereby placing themselves outside the line of possible heirs unless noone else is available.
This is one way for the clans to create stronger links between them though even these can be broken.
